Only one sort of bread

Why do both of the bread shops in the village only make one sort of bread?  I'm not referring to the shape of the bread here, just the type, as there are lots of different sizes and shapes to be had but only one sort of dough.  White and bland.  Cottonwool, as my Dad would say.
It would be so lovely to be able to buy a brown wholemeal loaf with that very close texture and lovely taste, and oh for a seeded batch with all those gorgeous seeds that get stuck in your teeth!  Not only is the bread a bit boring, it costs quite a bit too at 1.40 euros for 0.5kg and another 5 cents if you want it cut... yes we do have a bread knife so we could save that little bit every day, but we'd have tons of crumbs all over the worktop and on the floor every time we cut a slice as it's so crusty.  We have to go and buy a loaf almost every day as we do get through it, and anyway it's stale if you save it to the next day and only fit for freezing for breadcrumbs or making garlic bread.  One of these days I'll wake up and find that I've been dreaming about the stuff!

Our favourite forn here has EXCELLENT bread, but just like you, it's all one kind...different shapes, but allllllll the same. One of the things I miss, and ask guests to bring is bread from different parts of Europe.

Some of the forns make nasty cotton wool bread, but the white we get is very good....one of life's little joys. When I got to BCN I've sourced some bakeries that make other types, I could let you know where if you like, and there is one I've been told about that makes AMAZING bread that queues form around the block for...haven't tried it yet, I think an excursion will be in order soon...now that I think about that.

I cannot even source different flours, which, if I had been thinking, I could have brought some back from Paris and done some baking! Mmmmmm.

Our Boulangerie makes the most amazing 'pain de compagne' and it keeps for a couple of days which the normal 'pain' does not. We have though bought a bread-maker to save driving or cycling everyday for bread and we have a great multi cereal brown bread we make. Diane

Oreneta, thanks for offering to let us know where those forns are, but we rarely go to Barcelona. And yes, you're right, there is only one sort of flour!

Aha - found you! thanks for the link.
We have great bread here but it is a large town and it took me a long time to find the right baker. I get a sort of brown cereals thing which is delicious and they also do very nice bagettes which I annoy Pep by saying how almost French they are in their tastiness!
There is also a baker who makes the best brown bread I have ever had but it's uphill to get there so I rarely do. I am thinking of making my own one day - I brought back some dried yeast from the UK but so far haven't got round to trying. I rememberit being a long job which often ended in tears.
In Cornwall we had at least two wonderful independent bread makers which, along with the WI marmalade can't be matched!

One of those little joys that I completely take for granted - being able to buy different sorts of bread with ease. Next time I come over, I will bring bread!

yes, i will also bring bread! or perhaps flour so you can make many loaves? it is very very crusty bread, you could probably knock someone out by swinging a crust at them, having said that though, i do like it! but then again i only eat it for 7 days a year :)

The "normal" bread we have in Turkey is also pretty boring and the worse thing about it is that it doesn't last long..it's only edible when fresh. We can sometimes find different types in the bigger towns, including wholemeal but it tends to be very dry and only suitable for toast.
