Rain rain rain all night through, and thunder and lightening for most of that time too... apparently, because I didn't hear it at all until a massive crack of thunder woke me at about six.  After that I couldn't get back to sleep because I was worried about Jasper downstairs, as he doesn't like storms at all.  What dog does!

Last night I spoke to my Mum on Skype and although most of our conversation was fine, she finished on a rather depressing note, saying something about the unlikelihood of my finding a job when I get back to the UK.  She may well be right, but she's supposed to be encouraging me!

Mum also found it hard to understand that the house I'm going to be living in doesn't have a back garden and that therefore I'll have to hang the washing in the front garden...  what!  You can't do that!  This followed on from her realising that I wouldn't have a washing machine until I'd bought one, and would have no car and so where was my nearest supermarket........   The reality of it all is beginning to really sink in now.  And that's not entirely to do with my mother!

I am sure life is not going to be easy for you and dare I mention how many unemployed there are in the UK. Sorry I am also supposed to be cheering you up. Having just got of the UK for all the reasons we have, I find it hard to believe that anyone wants to go back there. You obviously have many private reasons though we do not know about. Just take care and go one step at a time, life is what you make it so be determined. Diane

I want to go back because it's my country, my language, and my home... oh and of course because all my family are there. As for employment, I've got five years before I can claim my statepension (at age 63+) and I'm damn sure that I can get myself a job... crosses fingers behind back!

I am sure if I had family there I would feel different. I have no brothers or sisters, both my parents, long gone now, were only children so no aunts, uncles or cousins. Nigel has his father still in the UK and his only sister in Ozz so not a lot to attract us there. Apart form that I was 50 years in Africa and Nigel 20 so few friends there. Diane x

Yes, if I had no family there I'm sure I would feel different. I've got two children, two brothers, one sister, both parents, and five cousins, so quite a few to keep up with!

I'm sure you'll find some work, though whether in gardening, the building trade or teaching remains to be seen! And remembering that beautiful mural you made at the mas, maybe you shouldn't rule out setting up a business and doing something similar!
Good luck!

i think it will be hard at first with no car as you are not used to it but think, when we were young and you were on your own you managed to do all the shopping with no car AND two toddlers in tow! you will have to get one of those trolleys again. the job situation is pretty dire but i'm sure you will be able to find something because you are not fussy...so fingers crossed. ps check out freecycle and gumtree for washing machines x

Pueblo girl - thanks for that encouragement!

In a MG - thanks Rose. Yes, I will be getting a trolley, I think Asda will only be about a 40 min walk!!! Have already registered with Freecycle, and will look at Gumtree as I haven't heard of them before. x

Hi Jan,

Only just caught up with your blog. I'm giggling about your washing dilemma but worry not about the shopping. There seem to be very few places that aren't covered by online deliveries - do a big enough shop and it more than covers the cost of delivery and if you get a bike, you can easily do a top up shop for the fresh stuff as and when. It's worked for me for the past year, anyway.

Hi Jo and thanks for those encouraging words. Once I get a job and can afford the big outlay, then yes may well go for the online basics big shop. We will see.
